About the hospital   

Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital is the Government owned facility (registration ID: no 1-071031) under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.

The hospital provides regional level referral services to more than 200 public and private owned health facilities including hospitals, health centers, dispensaries and clinics. The hospital serves a population of more than 2,200,000 people residing in Dar es Salaam Kinondoni and Ubungo municipals and the surrounding areas.

Functions

Mwananyamala as a Regional Level Referral Hospital, based on the Standards for Health Facilities per Level in the United Republic of Tanzania (Volume 3 of 2015) have the following functions:

To support health services and for health care in general

To provide wide-ranging technical and administrative support and education and training for lower levels of health Facilities

To provide for an effective, affordable health care service for a defined population, with their full participation, in cooperation with agencies in the region that have similar concerns

History

Mwananyamala regional referral hospital was initially established as Dispensary in July 1973 whereby only maternal and child health clinic services were provided. In 1983, the facility was expanded to accommodate the increasing number of patients and become District Hospital, with four wards and bed capacity of 112.

In October 2010, the hospital was upgraded to the regional referral hospital through Government Gazette issued on 5th November 2010.
